SmartPill Motility Testing

SmartPill is an innovative diagnostic test that helps assess the movement and function of your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It’s a small capsule that you swallow, and it provides valuable information about how your digestive system is working.

The SmartPill capsule contains sensors that measure different parameters as it passes through your GI tract. These sensors record data such as pressure, pH levels, and temperature, gathering detailed information about the function of your digestive system. The capsule is about the size of a large vitamin pill and is designed to be easily swallowed.

Once you swallow the SmartPill capsule, it travels naturally through your entire GI tract, just like any other food or liquid you consume. As it passes through your esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon, it collects data and transmits it to a small receiver that you wear on a belt or a lanyard. The receiver records the data, which we later analyze to evaluate the motility or movement patterns of your GI tract.

SmartPill motility testing provides valuable insights into the function of your digestive system. It helps diagnose various GI conditions such as gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying), chronic constipation, and other motility disorders. By analyzing the data collected by the SmartPill, we can assess the time it takes for food to travel through your digestive tract, identify areas of slow movement or obstruction, and determine if the acidity levels in different parts of your GI tract are within the normal range.

Before undergoing the SmartPill motility test, you need to set an appointment with Dr.Yang who will provide specific instructions on the test. These instructions usually include fasting for a certain period of time before the test, avoiding certain medications that could interfere with the results, and not undergoing any other imaging tests such as an MRI during the test period. It’s important to discuss any concerns or medications you are taking with Dr.Yang before the test.

The SmartPill test is generally well-tolerated, and most patients don’t experience any discomfort or pain during the procedure. The capsule is designed to be easily passed through your stool and is typically disposable. However, it’s important to let Dr.Yang know if you have a history of bowel obstructions or other conditions that may affect the passage of the capsule.

Once data is collected from the SmartPill, Dr.Yang will analyze the information to generate a comprehensive report. This report helps Hawaii Gastro Health understand how your GI tract is functioning and guides in developing an appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Dr.Yang will review the results with you and discuss any necessary treatment or lifestyle modifications based on the findings.
