Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a common condition characterized by loose, watery stool. It can be caused by various factors and is often a result of the body’s attempt to rid itself of harmful substances.

There are several common causes of diarrhea. One of the most common causes is an infection, typically from viruses, bacteria, or parasites. These infections can be acquired through contaminated food or water, poor hygiene practices, or close contact with an infected individual. In such cases, diarrhea is often accompanied by symptoms like abdominal cramps, nausea, and fever.

Additionally, certain medications, such as antibiotics, certain cancer treatments, and some antacids, can cause diarrhea as a side effect. Intestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, and malabsorption syndromes can also be associated with chronic diarrhea.

To manage diarrhea, it’s important to address the underlying cause and alleviate symptoms. Here are some general recommendations:

  1. Stay hydrated: Diarrhea can lead to dehydration due to the loss of fluids and electrolytes. Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, clear broths, and electrolyte-rich drinks like oral rehydration solutions, to replace the lost fluids. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can worsen dehydration.
  2. Follow a bland diet: Stick to easily digestible foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce, toast (BRAT diet), and avoid spicy, fatty, or high-fiber foods until your stools become more formed.
  3. Probiotics: Consider taking probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that can help restore the balance of gut flora and improve digestive health. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any supplements.
  4. Medications: Many medications can cause diarrhea or the interactions of some medications themselves are common causes of diarrhea.  It is important to review these to determine if there are side effects.”

If diarrhea persists for more than a few days, is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool, high fever, or dehydration, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly. If any of these are a concern to you, set an appointment with Dr.Yang and he can perform a thorough evaluation to determine the underlying cause of your diarrhea and recommend appropriate treatment.
